AirTrain History
Built, managed and maintained by The Port Authority of NY & NJ, AirTrain Newark was established to improve customer convenience while traveling to and from the airport. It is part of the Port Authority's capital investment plan, which is designed to deliver fast, convenient and comfortable travel experiences to people in the region.
The construction of AirTrain Newark began in May of 1997 with the expansion of the existing 1.9-mile on-airport monorail system. The monorail was completely overhauled and extended by 1 mile to Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station — a newly constructed airport train station on the Northeast Corridor Line. In order to better identify the system as an airport access service, the monorail and extension were renamed AirTrain Newark. On October 21, 2001, the Newark Liberty International Airport Station opened, completing the connection between AirTrain, NJ TRANSIT® and Amtrak.

Since its inception, millions of passengers have used this convenient service. And those numbers keep rising, with over 30,000 passengers using AirTrain Newark to, from and around the airport each day.
As a companion effort, the Port Authority is building another AirTrain service at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
